Why I Quit Facebook and Instagram as an Artist

It all starts with good intentions

Hi I am Phillipa and I am surface designer and illustrator from New Zealand. Welcome to my first blog. This week its all about social media. Specifically, facebook and instagram.

I, like many people wanted to stay in touch with and connect with new people. These apps provided this and it was wonderful. However, as they grew things took a turn for the worse. Now they are addictive. Now I worry about my data and what its used for.

If you use them for your business like I did then there is endless pressure to create and post things. Its hard to keep up with the evolving algorithm beast. As an artist, my work is only seen (if I am lucky) for seconds at best before people move on. This is disheartening as I have spend many hours creating it. I often wondered what the point was? However, I would always come up with well, I want to connect and stay in touch with people. I want to see other artists work and be inspired. So I hung on for a bit longer. I found myself increasingly checking my phone and endlessly scrolling. I spent way too much time on these apps. I like many people became addicted to them. I deleted it from my phone but I would always re-download it. I told myself it was for my business and this time I would be more controlled. It didn’t work and I would soon be back to old habits. Sound familiar? The final straw was after watching the documentary The Great Hack on Netflix. It talks about how facebook data was sold to Cambridge Analytica. This company then used this data to sway elections around the world. I was horrified. This was it for me. I quit.

So now what? Well this blog is the start of a new journey for me and I hope for you too. You can pop in and see what I am up to then leave. You won’t be scrolling endlessly. Your data is safe. My art will stick around longer - you can come back to see it easily. This blog will be a colourful happy space with art and interesting stories.

See you soon!
