My Top 7 Gift Ideas For Artists

Updated: Jun 6

It can be daunting to shop for a creative. There are lots of options out there so where do you start? I have narrowed it down to give you my top 7 gift ideas for artists. Please note none of these items are sponsored.

1. Supplies: An obvious one but a good choice nonetheless. Every artist, unless they only work digitally, can always do with another sketchbook. You could also add some pencils or paint supplies. If you are not sure what brands they like then be nosy (or get someone else to be) and look in their studio/art space and see what they have. A little travel set could also be a great choice. It will encourage them to get outside and do some drawing.

2. Art Prints: Brighten up their walls with some art prints from their favourite artist. Its nice to get it framed too but if you are posting it then maybe not. If you are not sure which prints they might like you can always get them a gift card from that artists shop.

3. Art Books: Instructional or art of books are awesome gifts. These are often a bit more expensive so they might not have them yet. Here are some of my favourite instructional books that I have: Color and Light by James Gurney, Artists Master Series Color and Light (3D total publisher), How to be a Children's Book Illustrator (3d total publisher). I have two art of books - the Window to Worlds by Devin Ella Kurtz and the Art of Loish by Loish. But get the art of book from artists that they like. You could also get the art of pixar, disney or a big gaming company if they like the art in them. A cheaper option is to find e book versions. Its usually just instructional ones but they are still great. I have many by Mitch Leeuwe. These were great when I was just starting out.

4. Gift Vouchers: I know sounds a bit boring but it doesn’t have to be! You could get a gift card to their favourite artists store so they can get whatever they like. Another option is to gift them a subscription to schoolism, the creature art teacher, SVS learn or skillshare. Gift cards can be purchased for an art supply store too. Then there is the good old prezzy card which can be used for just about everything!

5. Upgrading their studio or art space: Do they need a standing desk or a new chair? Do they need a new drawing tablet? You could offer to upgrade parts of their computer like a new graphics cards, more storage or RAM. This will be more practical with a PC computer.

6. Picnic blanket: What? Yes, you read right. I use one for when I drawing outside. Its light, easy to travel with and its comfortable to sit on. Plus you can bring you lunch and have an actual picnic!

7. Headphones: If they listen to music while drawing then this is great option. I recommend noise cancelling ones. My husband brought some the other day for his music studio as a second pair for only $55 NZD. That's pretty good!

I hope this helps you choose something for the artist in your life. If you are an artist then what would you like? Should I add some more options to my list? Let me know in the comments.
