A large old book with golden edges on the pages was source of my inspiration for this illustration. The book was printed in 1888. The words inside describe NZ birds habits and habitat. It is old fashioned in that some things we just wouldn’t do anymore, but I do like the surprising insight the author gives into the birds personality. Especially the birds long gone now. The pictures inside are of the old scientific style and beautifully rendered. I was very inspired and decided to do a study of one of them, the kokako. I wanted it to be in my style still so I changed it up a bit but kept the essence of it. I like how it turned out and I will put it up somewhere in my lounge.
You might now recognise the book but just incase you don’t its called the History of New Zealand Birds by Sir Walter Buller and it was illustrated by J.G Keulemans.
