Happy Diwali everyone! I hope you got to spend your time with loved ones and got to eat lots of yummy food. For those of you that don’t know Diwali (or the festival lights) is a celebration of light over dark. It also coincides with the Hindu new year. Everyone comes home to see their family and there’s plenty of good food to be had. It is traditional to visit family/friends houses and bring Indian sweets to every home you visit. There is also dancing, lights and lots of colourful Rangoli art.
I began my day in the garden planting new plants with my husband. I say we but really it was mostly him doing all the hard work haha. I am looking forward to having all the things we planted: blueberries, tomatoes, chilies, strawberries, and lemons. I think this ties in with Diwali too. Diwali is about new beginnings and these plants are just beginning their journey.
This Diwali was different for me as for the first time I got experience it like I was India. Especially in the afternoon when the festivities started. We headed off to the Indian sweet store first and picked up a bunch of sweets for friends. We showed up at their houses next. It was so fun to sit and chat (and eat good food!). I couldn’t eat the sweets but indulged on mattri. I cannot get enough of the stuff usually but really ate too much of yesterday! We finished the day with a nice home cooked Indian meal with friends. It really felt like Christmas but with an Indian flare.
