Knowing what to write in your greeting cards can be tricky sometimes. Its even worse when you leave it to the last minute. I have definitely been there! Here are 10 tips for writing meaningful greeting card messages:
1. Give yourself plenty of time
2. Keep it simple - no need to write a novel unless you want to
3. Think about why you are sending them the card in the first place.
If its Christmas why did they make the list of people you were going to send a card to? Do you send Christmas cards as part of your yearly catch up? Do you want to start a dialogue and prompt that yearly catch up?
For other occasions: Do you want to thank them for something they did this year? Are you sending them a card because they are special to you? Will you really miss them at work because of xyz. Do you want to offer your support for a hard time they might be going through?
Answering questions like these will help you decide how personal you want the message to be. It might help to jot down some ideas as they come to you.
4. Write your message on a draft bit of paper first. I can’t even count the number of times I have had to print the card again! Luckily for me I could do this. Now I am more organised and use that draft bit of paper.
5. If you are still not sure what to write consider adding a famous quote from their favourite movie, song or celebrity. Maybe you want to choose something from your favourites instead. This might end up helping you come up with other things to write.
6. If you have got this far and you have decided that you really aren’t a word person then perhaps a cute little doodle of something will help. That way are more the generic message won’t look so generic as you have added your own artistic flair. I would suggest trying out some ideas on a draft pieces of paper first.
7. So you can’t draw either? Doesn’t matter as you can now you can make the card funny by drawing stick people (or a stick person). You can make a funny joke about this.
8. You are not a fan of stick people and you don’t want to draw some. How about using a stencil? Google some stencils appropriate for the occasion and cut them out. I would suggest using ones with simple shapes and less curves as circles are hard to cut out from the middle.
9. Don’t like stencils aye? What about adding a funny joke?
10. Still stuck? Then here's some messages to get you started:
